The M50 Motorway project consisted of the reconstruction and upgrade of 28km of motorway, 8 intersections/ fly-over’s and the ancillary works required for the associated national roads. The project was particularly complex as all works were carried out while maintaining 4 lanes of live traffic at all times. Time and programme constraints were critical during the project as this motorway surrounds Dublin City Centre and is the main artery for access to the city from all over the country. Works to form the new 8 lane motorway consisted of 100 hectares of site clearance, the bulk excavations of in excess of 1 million cubic meters of materials, the filling of an equal quantity of suitable material to form new roads and embankments, the placing of 150,000 m3 of capping and sub-base of the new roads, the processing and recycling of 200,000 tons of rock and concrete, the breaking of 100,000 m3 of rock, the installation of 28 km of drainage and utilities and the disposal off- site of in excess of 125,000 m3 of unsuitable material to licensed tipping facilities.
